Panetta Speaks Italian During Briefing in Rome

ROME – It’s no secret U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is a proud of his Italian heritage.

He frequently tells stories about how his parents immigrated to the United States in hopes of giving their children a better life.

So it should come as no surprise that the secretary was visibly excited to be in Italy this week for meetings with the prime minister, president and defense minister.

Panetta surprised reporters at a Jan. 16 briefing at the Italian ministry of defense when he spoke, you guessed it, Italian. To see video of the short speech, check out the video up top.
