Here’s something you don’t see every day: a recruitment ad for the Afghan National Army, with the high-quality video and rousing music one expects from a US recruitment ad you’d catch on Sundays during football season.
The above screengrab is from a video posted on a Facebook fan page for the Afghan National Army and shared by the “ISAF: Nato Forces in Afghanistan” Facebook page. The obvious question is why the video is in English, if the target is Afghan recruits. The second question is the origin of the ad; it’s unclear if this is an official ad, something made by supporters of the ANA, or if it is even airing in Afghanistan.

Regardless of where it came from, the ad can’t hurt. Recruitment has been a serious challenge for Afghan’s military, with the US watchdog in Afghanistan recently warning that recruitment for a special counter-narcotics wing is so bad that the US should hold off on supplying it with new equipment. That followed an earlier report that only 60-80 percent of the ANA are present for duty at any one time, due to desertion or injury.
