Kurdish forces backed by US air power have halted Islamic State (IS) gains in Iraq. In response, the radical group has vowed revenge against the United States, and has beheaded an American reporter while also expanding its influence in Syria.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel stated last week that IS was beyond any terrorist group ever seen, opening the door for action against Syria.
